Thanksgiving Tips and Tricks to Save Calories

IMG_4007
It’s almost here!  Thanksgiving to me is a day to enjoy good food, good friends and family and relax!  It also means a long weekend for me!  I look forward to Thanksgiving more than any other holiday because of this!

How can we not destroy all our hard work in the gym in just one weekend?  I don’t like to limit myself or say something is “bad” and not eat it because of the calorie content….but still, I don’t want to set myself back on my fitness level because I overate.

Here are some simple tips to help reduce your calories without having to say “no thank you.”  I posted this last year, but it bears repeating:

  1.  Serve a buffet instead of placing food on the table.  It’s been shown that guests will load up on salad and veggies first and eat less of the mashed potatoes and stuffing if it is served buffet style.  Guests that had access to all the food on the table, tended to eat less veggies and salad and eat more carbs like potatoes, stuffing and dinner rolls.
  2. If you want to eat less, use a blue plate or a plate with a wide border.  White plates make you eat more than a colored plate or a plate with a wide border.  The color blue is subconsciously less appetizing, so we eat less.  The wide border visually sets a limit on how much we put on our plate.  A plate with no border tends to make us fill our plates up.
  3. Drink red wine vs. white wine.  Guests tend to drink more white than red wine.  These are empty calories with lots of sugar.  Serve a beaujolais or pinot noir to curb the consumption of calories and alcohol.  Beside, we don’t want to be getting into political debates at the table after having a few too many glasses of wine.

There you go! Next week I’ll give you some workout tips on how to Huff and Puff Before you Stuff!  🙂
