Meditation 101

First and foremost, DO NOT put Meditation on your TO DO list!  This defeats the whole purpose of what meditation is about.  You will only put added pressure on yourself to do it and then beat yourself up when you don’t do it and can’t check it off your list.  Here are some helpful tips to make your session more successful:

Why do you want to meditate?  Answer this question first.

  • Stress relief

  • Reduce the chaos in your brain

  • Have a clearer mind and more focus

  • To find more spirituality

  • Improve your yoga practice.

All of these are good answers, but knowing the why will help with the next few questions and make your meditation more successful

  • How do you want to meditate?  Lying down, sitting, walking/standing

  • What makes you focus better?  Eyes open, eyes partially closed, eyes closed (not recommended for the walking meditation! )

  • Other things to consider.  Soft sounds playing, dark room, something visual to look at like a view or a picture or a candle flame.

Once you’ve tried or identified these things, you should be able to settle into your meditative practice more successfully.  Good Luck!  Look for my next Meditation 101 post next week to see some tips on guided meditations.
