Breast Cancer Numbers Drop in Marin County!

Marin County, CA once held the uncoveted title of highest rates of breast cancer in the World!  The WORLD people!  This is not a title we want to have!

Good news!  A recent study found a 31% drop in breast cancer in Marin County!

Tracking of breast cancer began in 1988 and Marin County  lead the pack, until now.  So why the drop in numbers?

Women in Marin, an affluent county, have “a whole cluster of established risk factors for breast cancer.” These risk factors tend to go along with being more affluent: later age of childbearing, if at all, and higher alcohol consumption. White women are at slightly higher risk of developing breast cancer than are women of other races or ethnicities.

Researchers identified a link between use of hormone replacement therapy and breast cancer. Affluent women were also more likely to use hormone therapy.  Women abandoned the hormones in droves, and the breast cancer rate started to fall, in Marin and nationwide.

Now the rates of breast cancer in Marin County are equal to the rest of the country.  Thank goodness!

Here are some photos of my lovely ladies who have survived breast cancer and other types of cancer.  They are rocking a backbend in their Pilates reformer class!
