How to save a few calories this Thanksgiving

1Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for Thanksgiving and all the scrumptious food available.  I love cooking and hosting Thanksgiving.  It’s one of my favorite holidays because there is no agenda.  It’s a day to spend with family and friends and just relax.  I don’t try to limit myself as to what I eat on this day of Thanks, but what could we maybe do just a little bit differently to maybe save on the calorie consumption?

Here are a few tips and tricks that will help you subconsciously limit what you pile on your plate.

1.  Buffet vs. Table Service.  Those that served a buffet style where guests had to get up and fix their plate ate less.  Guests tended to load up on the veggies and salad courses first and then take less of the potatoes, stuffing and turkey.  Those that put all the dishes on the table for guests to serve themselves ate significantly more of the stuffing, mashed potatoes and turkey and considerably less of the salad and veggies.

2.  Plate size and color.  Studies show that blue detracts most people from eating.  Something about the color blue turns people off and tends to make them eat less.  White plates make you pile up your plate.  Plates with a wide or colorful border also tended to make people put less on their plate versus a plate with no band or border.

3.  White wine vs. Red wine.  Those that were served white wine drank more than those that were served red wine.  White wine is lighter and less heavy to drink so your guests may drink more of it.  Red wine is a heavier drink and guests will mostly tend to drink less of it.

So there you have it!  Happy Thanksgiving!
