I have to go to work. I have to pay my bills. I have to go to this event. Sure, we have to pay our bills and in order to pay our bills we have to work. In some cases you “have to” do things. But in other cases, by just changing the phrase from “have to” to “get to” will change your perspective and attitude.
A few months ago I was telling a friend that I “had to go to this yoga training.” My friend corrected me and said, “you GET to go to yoga training!” That one word changed my attitude and perspective. Having to do something conjures up images of drudgery, and requirements. There is no choice in the matter….I HAVE to do it. But by changing that one word to GET – now it becomes a choice. A positive choice that reflects free will and an opportunity instead of a chore! Wow! Now I find myself saying that one word in my teaching…..now you GET to do Teaser! Now you GET to do 100 more reps! I’m alive, I’m healthy, I’m free to make choices and I choose to get up every morning and teach Pilates because I love it! Saying the word GET reminds me of this and how much I love my job, because lets be honest…..when it’s cold and rainy and I’m tired, I don’t always feel like I GET to go teach Pilates….it feels more like I HAVE to go teach Pilates. But by changing that one word, it also changes my perspective and attitude. Try it! Whenever I say it, I smile to myself and thank my friend for that gentle reminder.
Today, try telling your friends and family what you GET to do this weekend, not what you HAVE to do! See if it doesn’t change your attitude and perspective just a little bit!
